SOP for x-ray extremityX-ray examinations for extremities are often taken in Hospital. There are 2 categories of extremities including the lower and upper parts.

The lower regions like foot, ankle, lower leg, knee, thigh area and the upper parts such as hand, wrist, lower arm, elbow and humerus. Both of them can be both sides (right and left).

We call it extremity because these organs can be used for rotating, moving or flexibility functions. Their role in the human body is really vital and important, so it’s vulnerable for fracture and dislocation, spur formations or calcification, arthrosisosteoporosis and the other abnormalities. Trauma and aging factors are also the main reasons why they can get more trouble.

Below is the Standard Procedure for normal patient in Hospital or Clinic as follows:

– The patient will remove their clothes if their pelvic, hips, foot or thigh areas will be x-rayed.

– The accessories like rings, watch and others are also the objects of removal things.

– Position of patient can be sitting or lay down on the examination table.

– Adjusting collimator and x-ray beam to minimize radiation exposure for the patients.

– Gonad-shield and apron can be used to protect sensitive areas.

– Tailoring the machine condition (mA, second and kV) at the control table associated with the object thickness of the patient’s body.

– Giving instruction to the patient not to move during radiation exposure.

– Different position is taken with 2 minimal basic positions for each object of extremity.

– The film will be processed in Digital ways, manual system or automatic processing depends on the x-ray facility where the patient treated.

– Good quality of extremity photo is the bony structure is clear and not moving. Sometimes, requesting doctor or Radiologist needs soft tissue pattern to visualize of foreign body (corpus alienum).

For patient notice:

Please check your identity in the photo, it’s your data or not. The marker for example R (Right) and L (Left) is true or not. This re-check is needed to make sure before the next step or further treatment.

This procedure cannot be implemented with unusual patient like using wheelchair or any emergency case. Sometimes, children patients are also difficult to be done because some of them must have the special treatment due to crying or scaring during examination.

Children can be son or daughter is usually afraid with the x-ray machine figure because of big and they think x-ray is the same with injection. They just realized the x-ray test is painless after examination has done.
